What is CBT?
Core principals of CBT are that psychological problems are often based, in part, on faulty or unhelpful ways of thinking and in part, on learned patterns of unhelpful behavior. CBT treatment usually involves efforts to change thinking and behavioral patterns in ways that help a person cope more effectively and improve mood and anxiety symptoms.
Cognitive interventions focus on helping clients to learn to recognize thinking errors that are creating problems, and then to reevaluate them in light of a more balanced perspective. There is also focus on using problem-solving skills to cope with difficult situations and helping clients improve their confidence in their sense of self.
Behavioral interventions focus on helping clients shift unhelpful patterns. These include teaching clients ways to face their fears instead of avoiding them. This is often referred to as exposure therapy. Clients also learn how to practice habits and behaviors that align with their goals and values. Stephanie also teaches clients ways to calm mind and body through mindfulness practices.
CBT has been clinically proven to help clients in a relatively short amount of time with a wide range of disorders, including depression, mood disorders and anxiety. Stephanie has a particular specialty in treating anxiety disorders with CBT; including OCD, Phobias, Panic Disorder and Generalized Anxiety.
Stephanie employs a collaborative and validating approach to her work with individuals and families. She strongly believes that the way you feel makes sense once you understand it. Stephanie combines CBT perspectives and strategies with an added focus on mindfulness and self compassion to help her clients reach their therapy goals.
